20 years ago we had this crazy idea to move from Switzerland to WA to make a living from farming Marron. When we arrived in 2002, our friend Glen Whisson, who at that time was Head of Applied Biosciences at Curtin University, was kind enough to offer us work as teachers and consultants in his department. Of course, we wanted to get paid for this, which required us to register as a business with ASIC. “Two Biologists Who Desperately Need Some Money Pty Ltd” didn’t sound very appealing as business name, so we had to come up with a more suitable name for our to-be-business. Sitting around Glen’s new wood fire pizza oven and sipping on a good WA red, we decided to call it Koonac Enterprises. Koonac, much like the Marron, are edible freshwater crayfish that are native to WA. However, unlike the name Marron, which was already taken, no other business existed with the name Koonac. And so, the journey of Koonac Enterprises began…
